Getting in

• By Plain

Vietnam Airlines has four flights daily between HCMC and Duong Dong, Phu Quoc's main town. A popular round trip between HCMC and Phu Quoc is to travel overland through the Mekong Delta, taking a ferry to the island from Rach Gia and, when you're finally tanned and rested, taking the short one-hour flight back to HCMC.

• By Warter Transportation

Travelling to Phu Quoc by boat, ferry, hydrofoil and cruise liner is becoming a popular option as the number of tourists visiting the island increases each year. With continued development of the port facilities on Phu Quoc, more services will become available in the years to come. Phu Quoc boat ferry hydrofoil express transportThere are currently a variety of services available between the Vietnamese mainland and Phu Quoc Island, running frequent daily services. Other Sea Options

Some boats also run from Ham Ninh port in the east of Phu Quoc to Ha Tien on the mainland (near the Cambodian border) however departures are erratic, particularly in the dry season when a small boats transfers passengers between the ferry and Ha Tien due to low water levels. Best to use alternative services.

The Border crossing between Cambodia (Kampot) and Ha Tien opened in May 2007, however if entering Vietnam you will need a Vietnamese visa in advance, which are not issued at the border. For information on border crossings, visit our Beyond Phu Quoc page.

There are however plans underway to introduce a service between Phu Quoc and Hon Chong on the mainland between Ha Tien and Rach Gia, by the Dong Song Xanh Company (Greenlines), though there has been no announcement as yet regarding a firm start date for this service.

International services

These services are less frequent than the services from the Vietnamese mainland, so do your research before turning up at international ports expecting a ride. More services are likely to come into service to match the development of modern port facilities in Phu Quoc, particularly the new international port at Dat Do bay which will accommodate large passenger ships.

Try the following Companies as a starting point, they provide international services to Vietnam from time to time.

* Starting in mid-January 2006 the Coco - Explore Cruise Ship docked at Duong Dong every Tuesday, setting out from Thailand via Cambodia to Phu Quoc Island, however this service is currently not available. Booking was previously available in advance at Danish C & C Travel Company.

* Duong Dong Express (see operators above) offer 7 day / 6 night high speed boat trips between Rach Gia, Cambodia, Pattaya and Bangkok. Visit their website for more details www.duongdongexpress.com.vn

Rach Gia Orientation

Ferries and boats depart for Phu Quoc from Rach Gia Park at the western end of Đ Nguyen Cong Tru. The local bus station in Rach Gia is at 92 Tran Phu St., a little north of the ferry terminal (best travelled by motorbike). There are regular connections by bus with Can Tho and to Ho Chi Minh's Mien Tay Bus Station. There is also a minibus stand on Tran Quoc Street with slightly better quality, air-conditioned vehicles that have assigned seats. For more information on ground transport from Rach Gia, you can contact the office of KienGiang Tourist at 5 Le Loi, or Tel: (84-77) 862 018.

Getting Around

It is only a couple hundred metres from Phu Quoc airport to the centre of Duong Dong, and can easily be walked. If you have heavy luggage or just don't feel like walking, you can take one of the numerous motorbike drivers at the airport, who normally charge about US$1 to most hotels. Just make sure you insist upon them taking you only to your hotel, as they are notorious for trying to divert passengers to places where they can collect a commission.

Bus

There is only a very basic bus service in Phu Quoc, with buses running every couple of hours between An Thoi and Duong Dong. When the ferry arrives in An Thoi, there will normally be a bus waiting to take passengers to Duong Dong.

Motorbike

Motorbike taxis are the most common type of transport on the island, and finding them won't be a problem. Bargaining is usually quite standard, with 5,000d the usual fare around town. Otherwise, 10,000d per 5 km is a good, approximate price guide. A trip to An Thoi from Duong Dong will normally be about 30,000d.

To hire a motorbike, ask at your hotel, where they normally start from around US$10 per day, with an additional $5 per day for a driver. The roads are in quite poor condition, with no paved roads on the island, so take extra care if you choose to hire a motorbike for yourself.

Hiking/cycling

The mountainous, forested centre of Phu Quoc is surrounded by a thin, coastal plain. Walking and cycling are relatively easy around the coast, although the climate means it will normally be a sweaty experience - make sure you bring lots of water with you! Cycling can be difficult in places due to the poor condition of the roads.
